Two Floridians are facing animal cruelty charges after their horse was killed in a collision with a car on a roadway in Hillsborough County.

Corporal Larry McKinnon, public information officer for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), said deputies responded a traffic crash in Lithia on Nov. 26, where a motorist reported that his vehicle collided with a horse that had run into the road.

“The driver sustained only minor injuries and his vehicle was heavily damaged, but the horse was dead on the roadway,” he said.

While investigating the scene, the deputies realized that the crash site was the same location as one they had visited the day before in response to a report involving a loose horse. The deputies reported that the horse killed in the crash was the same one that had gotten loose the day before and had been returned to owner James Kickliter
