An Iowa man accused of maltreating more than 60 horses has waived a hearing connected to the case.

Bremer County, Iowa, Sheriff Dan Pickett said that sheriff's department personnel received and followed up on a complaint about the condition of horses on a property owned by Steven Frahm of Sumner, Iowa, last year. Department personnel and a veterinarian subsequently worked with Frahm to improve the horses' condition, but last month the Sheriff's Department removed 61 horses from Frahm's property, Pickett said; Frahm later voluntarily surrendered the horses.

Frahm was subsequently charged with one count of serious misdemeanor animal cruelty and 10 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty; he is currently free on bond.

On May 14, Bremer County Prosecutor Jill Dashner said Frahm waived a preliminary hearing and has not yet entered a formal plea in the case
