Dakota County, Nebraska, authorities are seeking whoever is responsible for abandoning a mare near rural Jackson.

Dakota County Chief Deputy Tim Decker said the sheriff's department learned of a bay mare which was apparently abandoned in a pasture where other horses reside on Aug. 11. The horse was also allegedly malnourished, Decker said.

The horse's age has not been determined, Decker said, however the mare has a tattoo on her lip.

“Unfortunately, we can't read the tattoo, but we think the mare could be a retired Thoroughbred racehorse or a Quarter Horse,” Decker said
