A trio of wild ponies in South Carolina has been relocated to a safer location after another pony was killed by a motorist. The ponies are part of herd of wild Marsh ponies that roam a residential area of Beaufort County, South Carolina.

Tallulah Trice, of the Beaufort County Animal Control, said the Marsh Tacky is a rare breed native to South Carolina that descends from horses brought to the United States by Spanish colonists. The relocated ponies were among four animals that roamed an area of St. Helena Island, she said.

On Oct. 11, animal control authorities responded to a report a mare had wandered out of her usual roaming area and had been killed by a motorist, Trice said.

“Unfortunately, she was pregnant,” she said
