During his 27-year veterinary career, Lenz has worked in private practice, academia, and corporate business. He recently retired as senior director of strategic science and technology for Bayer Animal Health in Shawnee Mission, Kan. A 1975 graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, Lenz was board certified by the American College of Theriogenologists in 1986 and received a master of science from Texas A&M University in 1988
