The name has changed, but the drug has not. Lasix is now SALIX in the veterinary industry. When Intervet acquired Hoechst Roussel Vet in November 1999, Intervet agreed that Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Hoechst AG) would retain Lasix as the registered trademark for the human drug. This is why the veterinary furosemide product has now become SALIX.

Lasix, introduced in 1967 to veterinary practitioners, was the first or “pioneer” furosemide product. Renamed as SALIX, this pioneer product will be produced using the original formulation that veterinarians have prescribed for more than 30 years. SALIX will be uniformly manufactured in the same FDA-approved facilities, using the identical production outlines and raw materials. Since the product will not be altered, except for the name, veterinarians can expect the same results.

All presentations of the product, including the 12.5-mg and 50.0-mg tablets, and 50.0-mL injectable, will begin to appear under the new SALIX tradename throughout 2001.
