The Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station has published the scientific papers from the August 2002 workshop on mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS convened at the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Center. This information is available in book form or electronically at https://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/VetScience/mrls/index.htm.

The MRLS workshop proceedings is the definitive gathering of all types information regarding MRLS from researchers, practicing veterinarians, laboratories, and the industry. The workshop was sponsored by the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, Keeneland Association, The Gluck Center, and the UK College of Agriculture.

“We anticipate publication of the Proceedings will stimulate further activity to identify the cause of MRLS,” said David Powell, BVSc, of the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Center.

The topics are broken down into eight categories that each have summaries, plus a summary for the entire workshop. For example, Session 1 on Field and Clinical Observations on MRLS has five presentations and a summary. The presentations are: Clinical Observations Associated with Early Fetal Loss in MRLS during 2001 and 2002 Breeding Seasons; Field and clinical observations Related to Late Fetal Loss in Mares Affected with MRLS; Clinical Observations of MRLS in Critical Care Mares and Foals; Endophthalmitis: A Syndrome Associated with MRLS?; and Clinical Observations of the Pericarditis Syndrome. This collection of observations alone would make outstanding reading in order to help understand this syndrome
