Rick Porter’s Old Fashioned, who underwent surgery at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington after emerging from the April 11 Arkansas Derby with a non-displaced slab fracture of his right knee (read more), has been retired from racing. Porter campaigned the 3-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song in the name of Fox Hill Farms.

“The surgery went very well this morning,” according to Porter’s rockportharbor.com. “Dr. Bramlage told me that it would be almost impossible for him to return to anywhere near his level as a racehorse. After my discussion with Dr. Bramlage, I decided to retire him. I am not sure if I will stand him myself in either Kentucky or possibly Florida next year. There is always the possibility of selling him as a stallion prospect.”

Porter expects Old Fashioned to have a brief stay at Rood & Riddle and then be sent to Tom Simon’s Vinery near Lexington.

Old Fashioned, who at one time headed Steve Haskin’s Derby Dozen, set the pace in the Arkansas Derby before being caught by Papa Clem and finishing a half-length behind that colt. Old Fashioned retired with four wins and two placings from six starts and earnings of $583,280. He was trained by J. Larry Jones
