A 2,400-lb draft horse named Sylvia is recovering after firefighters in Estacada, Ore., rescued her from a 15-foot-deep hole on Monday night, The Oregonian reported.

The firefighters used a tractor to pull the 18-year-old mare from the crevasse that appeared when an earthen dam gave way under her. Kelleyerin Clabaugh, DVM, a veterinarian with Columbia Equine Hospital, assisted in the effort.

Sylvia’s owner Vicki McDade threw hay into the hole to distract the mare while Clabaugh administered a sedative. The firefighters then used straps and a tractor to extract her from the hole.

“When they were pulling her out, she was still trying to eat the hay,” McDade told the paper
