The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has postponed its planned removal of more than 2,000 wild horses from the Calico Complex Herd Management Area in northwest Nevada pending a review of public comments on the roundup.

Beginning Dec. 7, the BLM planned to remove 2,700 of the estimated 3,095 animals residing on the range and place them in long term-holding facilities. However, the agency delayed the roundup until Dec. 28 to allow public review of an environmental assessment report relative to the gather, said BLM spokesperson JoLynn Worley.

"We will issue our report on Dec. 1, and are required to review all comments. But we expect to move forward with the removal," she said.

On Monday, animal welfare advocates asked a federal court to halt the gather on grounds that it endangered the animals. That case remains pending
