Martin Furr, DVM, PhD, Dipl ACVIM, of Leesburg, Va., professor of medicine in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) at Virginia Tech, was reappointed as the Adelaide C. Riggs Chair in Equine Medicine by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Adelaide C. Riggs Chair in Equine Medicine was established in 1994 to recognize and reward an outstanding faculty member at VMRCVM's Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va. The appointment is for five years and is renewable.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 1991, Furr is now assistant head of the college's Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and medical director at the equine medical center. Over the past 16 years, Furr has successfully garnered research support of more than $830,000 in funding as principal investigator on 23 projects. He has published more than 90 scientific articles, papers, and abstracts, written six book chapters, and edited a textbook on equine neurology. He has presented 45 invited lectures or seminars. In 1997 his contributions to research resulted in the development of a new drug for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).

Furr achieved diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1991. He has been active in professional and graduate student instruction. For 11 years, Furr has been the coordinator for fourth-year veterinary student rotations at the equine medical center, and he has been an active lecturer in third-year veterinary student courses on the Blacksburg campus
