Law enforcement authorities and fire officials in Colorado are working together to determine who is responsible for a fire that killed 12 horses and several other animals on May 9.

The horses, a goat, and several chickens and roosters were residing in a corral on private property in Commerce City, Colo., when the fire broke out.

Tests conducted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation revealed that the blaze was deliberately set, said Deputy Fire Marshall Kevin Vincel of the South Adams County Fire Department. The Commerce City Police Department is also participating in the investigation.

If caught, those responsible for the fire could face multiple charges, including first-degree arson. That charge carries penalties including up to 15 years in jail, Vincel said
