Law enforcement authorities in King County, Wash., are seeking those responsible for abandoning two horses near a campground on July 21.

Sheriff's Deputies discovered the roughly 20-year-old bay Thoroughbred mare and the elderly red roan Appaloosa gelding wandering near the Tinkham Campground near North Bend after responding to a tip. King County Animal Care and Control Sergeant David Morris said both animals were underweight and in need of veterinary and farrier care. The horses are currently in rehabilitative care in foster homes.

If caught those responsible for the incident could face second degree animal cruelty charges. If convicted they could face penalties of up to 90 days in jail, fines up to $500, and be banned from animal ownership for up to five years.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the incident. Anyone with information about the case should call the King County Regional Animal Services tip line at 206/296-3939
