More than 40 of the 80 horses removed from a Kansas equine rescue in July are available for placement in new permanent homes.

Sheriff's deputies and veterinarians removed the horses from the Winding Road Equine Rescue and Retirement facility on July 30 after a tipster complained about their condition.

The facility's operator, Kristin Chambers, was later charged with one count of Class A misdemeanor animal cruelty in connection with the removal.

Since their seizure, the animals have received rehabilitative care at an undisclosed location. Karen Everhart, executive director of Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement Inc. and the Coffey County Sheriffs' Department equine management consultant on the case, said that on Aug. 30, a Coffey County judged released 45 of the animals for permanent placement in new homes.
