The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported Feb. 27 that a Maricopa County, Arizona, Quarter Horse has tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).

The EDCC said the horse exhibited clinical signs including fever, ataxia, and other neurologic signs of disease.

“The premises is under quarantine and strict biosecurity (measures are) being followed,” the EDCC reported. “The epidemiological investigation is ongoing.”

Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments in equids, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and EHM (the neurologic form). In many horses, the only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected
