According to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), as of Nov. 2, a total of 21 equids have tested positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA) in Wayne County since Sept. 18. Eighteen of these have been destroyed; the three most recent discoveries are quarantined.

The PDA continues to investigate all leads to identify, quarantine, and test Pennsylvania equids which have been exposed to the known positive animals. Regulatory authorities in the states of New York, Maryland, and Ohio have been warned of potentially exposed equids which are now in those states.

All test-positive horses originated on two Wayne Country camp horse farms. Horses remaining on those two premises are test negative and are under quarantine. An additional horse in Lebanon County was identified test positive on Oct. 28. PDA is investigating that case and has quarantined equids on the premises. A total of 47 Pennsylvania farms are under quarantine until further notice.

In the meantime, Pennsylvania authorities are ensuring that individuals transporting horses have a current negative Coggins test for every animal, and are fining and pressing charges against those who do not meet the requirement
