Darley lost one of its flagship Irish stallions Saturday with the death of In The Wings, winner of the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) and a proven European classic sire.
The 18 year-old son of Sadler’s Wells–High Hawk (by Shirley Heights) had been suffering from laminitis in recent weeks and was withdrawn from service in March. His condition deteriorated overnight and he was euthanized Saturday morning, Thoroughbred Internet.com reported.
Joe Osborne, managing director of Kildangan Stud in Ireland where In The Wings spent his entire stud career noted, “He was a brave and determined patient, but his condition deteriorated markedly in the last 12 hours. We decided to spare him further pain.
“He’d always been a special favorite of the Darley team. He was homebred, a tremendously talented racehorse and he’s been a remarkable stallion. Through his son Singspiel and grandson Moon Ballad, he’s founded a dynasty of Darley stallions, so we’ll be able to enjoy his influence for many years to come
