Suzanne Wilcox, DVM, of Hubbard, Ohio, has been selected by the AAEP’s 50th Anniversary Committee as the My Vet Matters Contest’s March honoree. Wilcox, who practices at Diamond Ridge Equine, Inc., was nominated for the award by horse owner Stacey Hotchkiss. Nearly 70 veterinarians were nominated last month.
In her nomination of “Dr. Sue,” Ms. Hotchkiss told of Dr. Wilcox’s heroic act of rescuing four horses from a barn fire. When it became apparent following the fire that the daily task of caring for the horses’ burns was too much for the owners to undertake, Wilcox visited the horses daily for several weeks to treat their wounds.
Described as selfless, giving and compassionate, Wilcox devotes her time to animal welfare cases in her community, providing assessment and care for abused horses. She also is a fixture at horse health events. She volunteers to give talks on important topics such as West Nile virus, EPM, and basic equine care. Wilcox assists with the annual 4-H vaccination clinics, administering all vaccinations, handling the Coggins tests and even bringing along an equine dentist so the horses can receive much-needed dental care.
“Her skill, devotion and dedication to her profession and her passion for horses are abundantly evident. As a result, Dr. Wilcox has touched and saved many lives,” said Hotchiss in her nomination
