World-renowned equine surgeon Larry Bramlage, DVM, MS, will be the “On Call” veterinarian standing by to assist the ABC Sports broadcast team during the May 1 running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The “On Call” program, developed by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), provides accurate information to the media and viewers regarding equine athletes and veterinary health-care issues.
Dr. Bramlage practices at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, where he specializes in orthopedic surgery and the treatment of Thoroughbred horses. An active member of AAEP, Dr. Bramlage is also an adjunct associate professor at Ohio State University. The many distinguished honors he has received include the 1994 Jockey Club Gold Medal in recognition of his effort, dedication and contribution to Thoroughbred racing.
“On Call” veterinarians make themselves available to the media to answer questions during busy events. This allows racetrack practitioners to attend to the most important task-caring for the horse. Since the program’s inception at the 1991 Kentucky Derby, “On Call” has served more than 60 events each year, including the Triple Crown races and the Breeders’ Cup.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, AAEP reaches more than five million horse owners through its 6,500 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
