EHV-1 Confirmed in Buffalo County, Nebraska

The Nebraska State Veterinarian’s Office has learned that a Buffalo County horse exhibiting neurologic signs of disease has tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported July 9.
“The horse will be euthanized,” the EDCC said on its website. “The facility is currently under voluntary quarantine with appropriate biosecurity in place.”
Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments in equids, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (the neurologic form). In many horses, the only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected
