Secretariat won his latest race by a margin the big chestnut was unfamiliar with at the racetrack—a nose.

The 1973 Triple Crown winner will be remembered as one of 15 subjects for a collection of stamps of the most enduring symbols of the 1970s. He was the 14th vote-getter on a list limited to 15.

Three subjects were chosen in the sports category. In addition to Secretariat, “Monday Night Football” and the Pittsburgh Steelers also will be depicted on stamps. The stamps are scheduled to be issued in October, 1999.

A total of 251,370 votes were tallied for Secretariat. The “Smiley Face” was the leader by a wide margin, with 469,867 votes over runner-up “Sesame Street,” which garned 378,785 votes
