Nearly 90 horses were evacuated ahead of the Calabasas fire that consumed hundreds of acres of land in Los Angeles County, California.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), reported that the so-called “Old Fire” began on June 4 when a car slammed into a utility pole toppling power lines in Los Angeles’ northwest suburbs. The blaze forced the mandatory evacuation of 5,000 residents of Calabasas and Topanga Canyon, including 89 horses that were transported to the equestrian center at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

“In addition to the horses we also had sheep, chickens, and goats,” said equestrian center Manager Paddy Warner.

By the time it was 80% contained, the fire had consumed 516 acres of land, the LACoFD said
