Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease found worldwide, and horses living in wet climates or those that are exposed to wetlands, ponds, or streams are susceptible to contracting the bacterium. But how much do you know about the disease?

In last week’s online poll, we asked our readers if they knew about leptospirosis. More than 450 people responded, and we’ve tallied the results!

oOf the 458 total respondents, 158 (34%) said they de not know what leptospirosis is. Another 135 individuals (29%) said they’ve heard of leptospirosis and know it has something to do with uveitis and/or abortion, while 117 respondents (26%) said they’re familiar with the word and know it’s related to horses, but that’s about it. The remaining 48 respondents (10%) said yes, their horse has a confirmed diagnosis and their veterinarian has educated them about the infection.
