Park County, Wyoming, authorities are investigating circumstances surrounding three horses left near Haymaker Ridge six months ago. One of the horses was found dead while the two surviving animals were rescued this month.

Wyoming Game and Fish Department representatives said the horses were left in the Washakie Wilderness last October. A hunter saw the three horse later that month, but they hadn’t been seen throughout the winter.

On April 13, the same individual, along with a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, discovered the two surviving horses near the area where they were initially spotted. The third horse had died apparently of starvation and exposure.

Officer Lance Mathess, public information officer for the Park County Sheriff’s Office, said case is under investigation
