Racehorse Point of Entry Suffers Condylar Fracture

Phipps Stable’s Point of Entry, winner of the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap run June 8 on the Belmont Stakes undercard, suffered a condylar fracture in his left hind cannon bone and will have surgery, trainer Shug McGaughey said. The condyle is the bulbous bottom or distal end of the cannon bone that fits into the fetlock joint.
McGaughey said he discovered the injury the morning of June 9 at Belmont Park, in Elmont, N.Y. Veterinarian Jim Hunt, DVM, took X rays (radiographs) and confirmed the damage.
Larry Bramlage, DMV, MS, Dipl. ACVS, will perform the surgical procedure June 10, McGaughey said.
McGaughey said if all goes well, Point of Entry would have two weeks of stall rest, two weeks of hand-walking, and then could be ridden under tack. He said it’s too early to say when or whether the 5-year-old son of Dynaformer will return to racing
