An Alberta, Canada, rancher is facing multiple animal cruelty charges in connection with the alleged maltreatment of 140 horses on his Drumheller property.

Last month, acting on a warrant, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) personnel discovered the horses along with 200 head of cattle residing on the property without adequate feed. Veterinarians euthanized four horses at the scene. They deemed the remainder as being in compromised condition and placed them under Alberta SPCA care. Officials also found carcasses of several cows and horses.

On May 11 the RCMP charged the property’s owner, John Barry Graham, with one count each of causing damage or injury to animals, disobeying a court order, and common nuisance, according to an RCMP statement. Graham was also charged with two counts of causing animals to be in distress.

The surviving animals remain under veterinary care, the statement said
