Texas fire officials are investigating the cause of a barn fire that claimed the lives of as many as 14 Arabian horses in Montgomery County on Aug. 9.

Montgomery County Fire Marshall Jimmy Williams said firefighters responded to reports of fire at the Goslin-Nix Training Center in Magnolia, around 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Twenty-eight horses, cumulatively valued between $60,000 and $100,000, were stabled inside the 5,000-square-foot barn when the blaze broke out, Williams said.

Firefighters and neighbors were able to remove 14 of the horses. Those animals received veterinary treatment at the scene for burns and smoke inhalation and are expected to survive, Williams said. The other 14 horses are unaccounted for.

"Montgomery County Fire Marshall’s Office Investigators are on scene working alongside firefighters to confirm how many horses perished in the fire," Williams said
