A bill that would make cruelty to horses and other livestock a felony in Tennessee died in the state’s House of Representatives Agriculture Committee on Tuesday. Current law applies to companion animals only

HB 3386 also authorized the courts to order those charged under the law to forfeit their animals.

Rep. Janis Sontany introduced the bill in response to the seizure of 84 horses from a Cannon County farm in November.

The Tennessee Farm Bureau opposed the measure on the grounds that it would subject farmers to unnecessary regulation
