An Alabama man is facing 32 counts of animal cruelty after authorities removed 16 equids from his Lauderdale County property where another 16 horses were discovered dead.

Lauderdale County Animal Control Officer Dwayne Oliver said he responded to a call concerning a wandering horse on July 24; further investigation revealed 16 horse carcasses.

“Some were pretty recent,” Oliver said. “One still had a halter on.”

Another 14 horses, a mule, and a donkey were also found on the property, Oliver said, all of which were allegedly malnourished. Two of the live horses were euthanized due their condition while the remaining animals are receiving rehabilitative care at a remote location, Oliver said
