Scamper, the champion Quarter Horse barrel racing gelding who was cloned in 2006, died July 4 at rider Charmayne James’ ranch in Boerne, Texas. He was 35 years old.

"What a gift he was," James said in a statement on her website. "It’s sad that he is gone, but what life he had. It’s something to be celebrated."

James’ said Scamper "passed away peacefully," and no cause of death has yet been reported.

Scamper and James dominated barrel racing in the 1980s and early 1990s. Together they earned 10 consecutive world titles in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and earned over $1 million throughout Scamper’s career. Scamper was also the first barrel horse to be inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame
