The University of Maryland (UMD) Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration Farm will be hosting a day-long seminar on horse pasture management on Sept. 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Scheduled lecture topics and speakers include:

  • "Basic Soil Fertility and its Importance in Horse Pasture Management"–Ken Sechler, Mid-Atlantic Regional Field Agronomist, Southern States Cooperative
  • "Renovation of Pastures, Including Grass Species Selection and Weed Control"–Dan Ludwig, Southeast Grazing Specialist, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
  • "Manure Management for Horse Farms"–Trish Steinhilber, PhD, University of Maryland Nutrient Management Program Coordinator
  • "Water Management to Reduce Soil Erosion on Horse Farms"–Steve Darcey, Prince George’s County Soil Conservation Engineer

The day will also include hands-on practice in the field and a horse farm showcase.

The lecture will take place at the University of Maryland Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration Site, located at 4241 Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City, Md. The $30 registration fee ($20 for Maryland licensed boarding stable operators) covers all educational materials and lunch. The registration form is available online and the deadline for registration is Aug. 31
