The Texas Animal Health Commission issued a press release late Friday (May 27) indicating that a new case of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) had been confirmed in the state; however, animal health officials do not believe that the new case is related to the ongoing EHV-1 outbreak.

"A Quarter Horse racehorse stabled in Ector County (located in Western Texas) displayed neurologic symptoms consistent with the disease, and ultimately tested positive for EHV-1," the release stated. "All horses on the premises are under quarantine and will be managed according to USDA recommendations for confirmed cases. Additional information is being gathered to determine if any other horses were exposed."

Initial investigations indicated that there was no connection with the current outbreak in the western United States and Canada (which is believed to have stemmed from a cutting horse championship competition recently held in Utah), the press release noted.

"Regarding the (Utah) event, there are currently 12 known horses in Texas that attended the event and 174 (stablemates) remaining under movement restrictions," the release continued
