On Feb. 4 the Rutgers University (RU) Cooperative Extension, the RU Equine Science Center, and the New Jersey Horse Council will offer a horse management seminar at the Cook Campus Center, located on the RU campus. "Responsible Horse Ownership in a Tough Economic Climate" will cover a variety of topics to help horse owners cut costs while practicing responsible horse ownership.

The one-day seminar will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. A continental breakfast and boxed lunch will be included in the registration fee: $50 for adults and $20 for children or students before Jan. 14, and $65 for adults and $35 for children or students after Jan. 14.

The sessions will be moderated by Carey Williams, PhD, equine extension specialist and associate director of the Equine Science Center. The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • 8:45-9:00–Welcome — Karyn Malinowski, PhD, director of the Equine Science Center
  • 9:00-9:50–Business Planning for Equestrians–Robin Brumfield, PhD, Rutgers University
  • 9:50-10:40–Horse Promotion and Marketability–William Day, PhD, Morrisville State College Equine Institute, SUNY Morrisville
  • 10:40-11:00–Break
  • 11:00-11:50–The Economics of Horse-Keeping–Carissa Wickens, PhD, University of Delaware
  • 11:50-12:50–Lunch
  • 12:50-1:00–Words from Our Sponsors
  • 1:00-1:50–Improving Pasture for Reduced Feed Costs–Carey Williams, PhD, Rutgers University
