Just as he did last time out, Thoroughbred Rapid Redux held off a stretch bid from Awesome Rhythm at Laurel Park, located in Laurel, Md., to continue his record-setting win streak, which has now reached 22 in a row.

Making his first start as a 6-year-old, Robert Cole Jr.’s Rapid Redux went wire-to-wire Jan. 4 in a $5,000 starter allowance race, winning by one length. J. D. Acosta rode the chestnut gelding for trainer David Wells.

Rapid Redux, who will be honored with a special Eclipse Award in California later this month, won 19 races in 2011 to tie Citation’s modern-day United States record for victories in a single season. He also broke the record for consecutive modern-day U.S. wins with 19, surpassing Pepper’s Pride and Zenyatta.

On Dec. 29, Wells announced he was seeking a retirement home for the gelding once his racing career ends in the near future.
