The Louisiana man charged with brutalizing his horse in 2007 has been sentenced to three years’ probation and is prohibited from contact with horses for three years.

Tony Meyers was charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals for dragging and running over a Quarter Horse mare before shooting it in the face because it refused to load in a trailer. The horse received rehabilitative care from Habitat for Horses Inc., and has since been adopted, said agency President Jerry Finch.

On Monday, Meyers pleaded guilty to all charges during an appearance in St. Martin Parish court. His sentence also includes court-monitored psychological evaluation and treatment. A sentence of three years at hard labor was suspended, said St. Martin Parish Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars.

Meyers was unavailable for comment
