The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonad stated there are 500 horses infected with equine influenza on 53 known infected properties across New South Wales as of Aug. 31. There are another 213 properties with 2,335 horses suspected of having equine influenza.

The Australian Associated Press said Queensland goverment officials fear horses carrying equine influenza have moved into that state from New South that horse owners who crossed the border just prior to the equine influenza outbreak (Aug. 14-28) let authorities and their veterinarians know. Racing will resume in Queensland next week under strict conditions.

Macdonald said the government has spent more than $1 million (Australian) in one week week trying to contain the outbreak of equine influenza. “Since the outbreak one week ago, the state government incurred costs of about $1.09 million, and this figure will obviously increase as the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and other agencies work to eliminate the disease,” said Macdonald.

“These are very difficult times for everyone, and I would like to thank the Thoroughbred industry, the harness racing industry, and recreational horse owners for their support during this past week,” he said. “The welfare of animals is being carefully managed with the RSPCA conducting regular inspections, where animals are locked down. The NSW Government is doing everything possible to prevent the spread of this disease
