An anaerobic digester serving an Ohio racetrack and the city of Columbus will divert more than 125,000 tons of organic waste away from an area landfill. The composting operation will be built at Scioto Downs, says WasteNews.com.


According to the article, Kurtz Brothers Inc., a Cleveland solid waste management firm, would build an anaerobic digester at Scioto Downs, a central Ohio harness racing track. The city of Columbus, Ohio, would send up to 25,000 tons of sewage sludge to the facility. “Food waste, along with fat, oil, and grease from local restaurants, also would go to the site,” the article stated.


Mike Long, SWACO executive director, was quoted as saying, “The area disposes of some 100,000 tons of food waste per year at the authority’s Franklin County landfill.”


The digester will dispose of manure from the racetrack and should “generate enough methane to generate enough electricity to power the racetrack with some leftover to sell to the local energy grid,” stated the article. The project should be up and running within a year
