While Hurricane Harvey takes aim at Texas’ Gulf Coast, horse owners in and around Corpus Christi, Houston, and as far west as Galveston are preparing for evacuation orders that could come at any moment.

On Aug. 24, Tropical Storm Harvey began spinning in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast. By Friday morning, the National Weather Service labeled Harvey a Category 2 hurricane expected to bring 15 to 30 inches of rainfall and 110 mile-per-hour winds when it makes landfall near Corpus Christi late Friday or early Saturday.

As the storm intensified, Texas Governor Gregg Abbot advised those residing in its path to heed local authorities’ evacuation recommendations. But by Friday morning, no mandatory evacuation order had been issued in Corpus Christi, said city spokeswoman Gabriela Salas Morrow.

Even so, some horse owners aren’t waiting for a mandatory order. Jean French of Horses on the Beach, which offers horseback riding on Gulf Coast beaches, said she relocated 100 horses to a property 80 miles west of Corpus Christi on Thursday
