Horse & Buggy (Low-Speed) Police Chase

Back in the Wild West it wasn’t surprising to have police chases via horseback. The bad guys tried to run away on their fast horses after robbing a bank, and the sheriffs or U.S. Marshals would give chase on their dependable steeds. It was more like an “equal speed” chase because both parties were using the same type of horsepower.

So what about a police chase of unequal speed? You know, one horsepower versus 315 horsepower? That makes for a rather low-speed police chase…and one for the national news.

An Amish teenager was arrested last week for leading police on a low-speed chase in western New York. Police reports say the teen ran a stop sign while driving his horse and buggy, then refused to pull over when approached by police. The “chase” (if you could really call it that) lasted no longer than one mile, when 17-year-old Levi Detweiler attempted a sharp turn, ending up with the buggy and horse falling over into a ditch. Detweiler immediately took off on foot, only to be quickly apprehended.

Two Amish men were able to help free the horse (no reports of any injuries to the horse) and right the buggy. Detweiler was arrested and charged with underage possession of alcohol, overdriving an animal, reckless endangerment, failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. He is currently being held on $500 bond at the Cattaraugus County Jail
