Gastric Ulcers in Horses: Frugal Management
- Topics: Article
Q:I have just had two sale horses diagnosed with grade 2 ulcers. They were tested due to seriously impaired performance. Considering the now known frequency of serious ulcers in so many performance horses and the expensive cure, is there any alternative, less expensive product for cure and management?
A: We don't have a less expensive alternative that is as effective as GastroGard or UlcerGard! However, feeding alfalfa hay, frequent pasture turnout, less stall confinement, continuous feeding of hay may be helpful. Some of the supplements that are high in antioxidants or calcium carbonate may be helpful also. However, feed supplements have not been thoroughly tested in horses.
