The amount of horses testing positive for Equine Infectious Anemia in Northeastern Pennsylvania has risen to 26. Of these horses, 25 have been humanely destroyed, while one horse remains under quarantine for life.

All horses can be traced back to two Wayne County Camp herds. (For more information on this specific EIA epidemic, see the January 2000 issue of The Horse, page 8.). All remaining horses on the two farms are test negative and under quarantine.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) has completed investigation into this matter. Anyone who can identify EIA-exposed equines in this area which have not been laboratory tested is asked to contact Bruce Shmucker, DVM, 717/783-9550
