The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada’s Elko District, Wells Field Office will begin an emergency wild horse water gather on or about July 23.

The agency will gather and remove approximately 250 horses from the Deer Spring area, located in the Antelope Valley Herd Management Area (HMA), as they have determined there is not enough water to support the number of horses in the area. Cattoor Livestock Roundup Inc. will used the bait and water trap method to conduct the gather; they will not use any helicopters.

The Antelope Valley HMA is 463,540 acres in size and the area around Deer Spring is located in the northwest portion of the Antelope Valley HMA. The Antelope Valley HMA’s current population is estimated at 1,755 horses; the BLM has set its appropriate management level at 155 to 259 wild horses
