WNV in Ohio Horses: Three Additional Cases Confirmed

Animal health officials have confirmed cases in Ashtabula, Champaign, and Geauga counties. Two horses are recovering and one was euthanized.

Animal health officials in Ohio have confirmed additional cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses residing in that state, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported Sept. 5. There are now 11 confirmed cases of WNV in Ohio horses in 2018, according to EDCC data.

On Aug. 28 the Ohio Department of Agriculture received confirmation that a 5-year-old Standardbred mare from Ashtabula County had tested positive.

“The horse began showing signs on Friday, Aug. 24,” the EDCC. “The horse had been weak and recumbent but was able to rise with assistance. A serum sample was collected and submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) on Aug. 25. On Aug. 26, the owner opted to euthanize the horse due to the poor prognosis. The horse was not vaccinated against WNV
