On Nov 21 officials at the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Animal Health Program confirmed that a symptomatic horse from Baltimore County tested positive for the the non-neurotropic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) at the Frederick Animal Health Laboratory. The horse, of unreported age, gender and breed, had been stabled in a barn with three other horses at a facility that houses 25 horses total, none of which currently show elevated temperatures or other signs of EHV-1.

The affected horse was euthanized Nov. 22 due to complications.

The affected Baltimore County farm was placed on official quarantine by the MDA, prohibiting movement on or off the farm until exposed horses are cleared for release. The farm has implemented enhanced biosecurity procedures for all horses in residence
