The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada’s Ely District, on or about July 27, will begin gathering and removing up to 100 excess wild horses from outside the Silver King herd management area (HMA), about 90 miles south of Ely.

The BLM will also gather and remove up to 130 excess wild horses from in and around the Triple B HMA, about 30 miles northwest of Ely. Hay and water will be used to gather the horses.

The appropriate management level (AML) for the Silver King HMA is 60 to 128 wild horses; the current population is 912 wild horses. The purpose of the gather is to remedy the fact that wild horses are moving outside the HMA and causing heavy to severe damage to the resources, the BLM said.

The Triple B HMA has an AML of 250 to 518 wild horses; the current population is 1,600 wild horses. The BLM monitors water sources districtwide and since late June has been hauling water to Pot Spring inside the Triple B HMA.
