On June 29, Maine Department of Agriculture Conservation and Forestry (MDACF) officials confirmed a Kennebec County horse with the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).

The affected 20-year-old unvaccinated Quarter Horse mare began showing clinical signs, including fever, peripheral edema (fluid swelling), and progressive neurologic signs, on June 18.

The horse’s residence facility has been placed under quarantine, and horses there are undergoing twice-daily temperature monitoring and contact tracing. The affected horse was euthanized.

Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments in equids, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalitis (EHM, the neurologic form)
