Twenty-four allegedly malnourished horses are receiving rehabilitative care after being seized in Johnson County, Texas.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Tim Jones said department personnel met with the horses’ unnamed owner several months ago to discuss the animals, which were allegedly residing without adequate access to food or water. Deputies advised the owner that the animals needed care and continued to monitor their condition, Jones said. Two animals were ultimately euthanized due to their condition, he said.

On Feb.3, sheriff’s department personnel confiscated 24 horses and one donkey from the property, Jones said.

“According to the paperwork, there was nothing in the property for the animals to eat,” he said
