Kimberly S. Herbert, Editor of The Horse: Your Guide To Equine Health Care, was elected president of the Kentucky Horse Council on Feb. 17. She served as vice president for the past year, as well as headed the Communications and Public Relations Committee and served on the Equine Welfare and KHC Horse Fair Committees. Herbert, who has been Editor of The Horse since March of 1995, also is a contributing editor to The Blood-Horse, a weekly news magazine about Thoroughbred breeding and racing. She has guided The Horse‘s focus on equine health since it was bought by The Blood-Horse Inc. in late 1994, first serving as managing editor.

Herbert serves on the board of the Lexington Fayette Urban County Horse Patrol Commission, which provides financial support and guidance for the mounted police unit based in Lexington, Ky. She also is on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Media, and works with the local riding for the handicapped organization.

A 1979 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture with a degree in Agricultural Communications, Herbert will strive this year to increase membership in the six-year-old Kentucky Horse Council, as well as diversify and improve funding of the group to allow the KHC to provide more educational opportunities for the horse owners and enthusiasts of Kentucky.

The KHC hosted Kentucky’s first Equine Summit on April 4 at the Kentucky Horse Park. All equine-related organizations based in Kentucky-from the smallest riding group to the largest national association-were invited to send a delegate to discuss Equine Welfare-Rights And Concerns. Speakers include Kentucky Senator Fred Bradley and House of Representatives member Royce Adams, Steve Ralls of the American Horse Council, and Milton C. Toby, an attorney with an extensive background in the horse industry. They highlighted the legislative and legal questions of equine welfare now facing all Kentucky horse owners.
