In May, colic almost took the life of the Dutch Warmblood gelding Grandeur, who was days away from a bid for the 2000 U.S. Olympic dressage squad.

With his rider, 1996 dressage team bronze medalist Steffen Peters, 12-year-old Grandeur was considered a top contender for Sydney. But after a light workout while preparing for the Olympic trials in Loxahatchee, Fla., Grandeur colicked.

During surgery, veterinarians discovered the horse’s intestine was wrapped around his spleen.

Grandeur is recovering nicely, thanks in part to his superb physical condition.
