Surprisingly, no trouble keeping weight on – and my guy is a 33 year old Thoroughbred, on pasture 24/7/365. I keep his grain ration (very small amount) the same throughout the year, blanketed when necessary for cold, rain, and wind, but make sure he has plenty of good quality hay available inside the barn. Besides for bonding time, he gets groomed to keep the mud off and his coat fluffy, to provide good insulation.
